The Toyota Tundra has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Ram 1500 doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The Tundra has standard Active Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Ram 1500 doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The Tundra has a standard Secondary Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Ram 1500 doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Both the Tundra and Ram 1500 offer rear cross-traffic warning, but the Tundra with Rear Cross Traffic Alert also has Parking Support Brake (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The Ram 1500’s Rear Cross Path Detection doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the Tundra and the Ram 1500 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available four-wheel drive, blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Toyota Tundra is safer than the Ram 1500:

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety does 40 MPH moderate front offset crash tests on new cars. In this updated test, results indicate that the Tundra is much safer than the Ram 1500:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH, results indicate that the Toyota Tundra is safer than the Ram 1500:

The Toyota Tundra Crew Cab Pickup achieved a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for the 2026 model year. This recognition was based on its impressive performance in the small overlap frontal crash test, updated moderate overlap front crash test, updated side impact crash test, headlight evaluations, pedestrian crash prevention testing, and vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention testing. The Ram 1500 has not yet been fully evaluated by the IIHS for 2026.

Warranty

Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the Tundra for 2 years and 25000 miles. Toyota will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Ram doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the 1500.

Reliability

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the engines in the Tundra have an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of the 5.7 V8 hybrid in the Ram 1500.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Tundra has a standard 776-amp battery. The Ram 1500’s 730-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Tundra’s reliability 36 points higher than the Ram 1500.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Tundra third among large light duty pickups in their 2025 Initial Quality Study. The Ram 1500 isn’t in the top three.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are better in initial quality than Ram vehicles. With 18 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Toyota higher than Ram.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Ram vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 80 more problems per 100 vehicles, Ram is ranked 26th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2026 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Ram vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota first in overall reliability. Ram is ranked 25th.

The Tundra has 6.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the Ram 1500 Short Bed’s standard fuel tank (32.2 vs. 26 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Tundra i-FORCE MAX has a standard locking fuel door with a power remote release convenient to the driver. The fuel filler door is not lockable on the Ram 1500. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank.

Transmission

A 10-speed automatic is standard on the Toyota Tundra, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Ram 1500.

The Tundra stops much shorter than the Ram 1500:

Suspension and Handling

The Tundra offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The Ram 1500’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Tundra’s wheelbase is longer than on the Ram 1500:

The Tundra 5.5-foot bed TRD Pro Crew Cab Pickup handles at .73 G’s, while the Ram 1500 Warlock pulls only .69 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Tundra 5.5-foot bed Limited Crew Cab Pickup 4x4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.1 seconds quicker than the Ram 1500 Warlock (28.5 seconds @ .59 average G’s vs. 29.6 seconds @ .59 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the Tundra 8.1-foot bed Extended Cab Pickup has a 2.3 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Ram 1500 5.5-foot Box Crew Cab (10.9 vs. 8.6 inches), allowing the Tundra to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Tundra 5.5-foot bed Crew Cab Pickup’s minimum ground clearance is .5 inch higher than on the Ram 1500 5.5-foot Box Crew Cab Air Suspension (11.2 vs. 10.7 inches).

Chassis

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the Tundra 5.5-foot bed TRD Pro Crew Cab Pickup is quieter than the Ram 1500 5.5-foot Box Big Horn Crew Cab 4x4:

Passenger Space

The Tundra Extended Cab Pickup has .1 inches more front headroom and .3 inches more front legroom than the Ram 1500 Quad Cab.

The Tundra Crew Cab Pickup has .1 inches more front headroom and .3 inches more front legroom than the Ram 1500 Crew Cab.

Payload and Towing

The Tundra’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Ram 1500’s (8300 vs. 6340 pounds). Maximum trailer towing in the Ram 1500 6-foot Box Tradesman Quad Cab is only 11610 pounds. The Tundra Extended Cab Pickup offers up to a 12000 lbs. towing capacity.

The Tundra has a higher standard payload capacity than the Ram 1500 (1820 vs. 1730 lbs.).

Ergonomics

The Tundra’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Ram 1500’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

The Tundra’s standard Smart Key System allows you to unlock the doors from either front door handle, unlock the tailgate, and start the engine, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Keyless Go standard on the Ram 1500 only offers hands-free access for the ignition, none to unlock the truck.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Tundra to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Ram 1500 doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

When the Tundra Limited/Platinum/1794/TRD/Capstone is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Ram 1500’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

The Tundra’s standard automatic temperature control maintains the temperature you set, automatically controlling fan speed, vents and temperature to maintain a consistent, comfortable environment. The Ram 1500 Tradesman/Express/Warlock doesn’t offer automatic air conditioning.

Compared to traditional radio, the Toyota Tundra’s standard SiriusXM satellite radio provides an unmatched listening experience. Its extensive coverage guarantees consistent, crystal-clear reception across the continental U.S., and access to over 100 channels dedicated to a multitude of genres, including music, news, sports, talk shows, and comedy, many with only limited commercial breaks. Satellite radio costs extra on the Ram 1500.
